The Space Between

Transition is not my gig.

From sleeping to waking, from lying in bed to getting up, from home to the office, from an old habit to a new way of living — I seem to struggle with the passage from one state to another. While some people switch effortlessly, I find myself navigating heavy opposing currents, waiting for my energy to align with the movement ahead.

Yet, once I arrive at the other end, I am usually fine. It is the getting there.

For a long time, I have seen this as a personal failing. Why can’t I simply move when I know I need to? Why must the simplest transition feel like such an undertaking?

Perhaps it is time to stop making an enemy of myself.

I am beginning to understand that knowing what I need to do and being ready to do it are not always the same thing. The mind may have decided, while the body is still catching up.

I need a little space between the two. A buffer zone. A moment to gather myself before moving forward.

This does not mean giving up on change. It means approaching change with greater kindness. Instead of demanding that I leap from one state to another, I can allow myself to cross the threshold gently, one small movement at a time.

I may never become someone who transitions effortlessly. I can learn my own rhythm. I can honor the pause without becoming imprisoned by it. I can be gentle with the resistance while still taking the next step.

After all, life is full of transitions. We are constantly leaving one moment and entering another.

Perhaps the art is not in crossing every threshold quickly, but in learning to cross it peacefully. Even in the space between.
