When Strength Becomes a Blind Spot

We often celebrate our strengths. They are the qualities that earn trust, open doors, and shape our identity. We are encouraged to discover them, develop them, and lean into them.

But what if the very qualities that have served us so well quietly become the obstacles to our next stage of growth? That possibility has been on my mind lately.

For years, I have taken pride in being dependable, thorough, and service-oriented. As an Executive Assistant, these qualities are not merely helpful—they are essential. Anticipating needs before they arise, paying attention to details others overlook, and seeing a task through to completion have become second nature.

Yet I realize that every strength carries a shadow. Thoroughness can slowly become overthinking. Reliability can become carrying responsibilities that belong to others. A willingness to serve can become difficulty saying no. Humility can quietly become undervaluing the gifts we bring. Even a desire to be helpful can become speaking more than listening.

None of these are character flaws. They are strengths that have drifted beyond their natural balance. We need to ask a different question now. Not, “Is this quality good?” But rather, “Is this quality appropriate for this moment?”

Perhaps this is what growth really looks like. Not trying to become someone different. But learning when to step forward with our strengths—and when to gently set them aside.

A skilled craftsperson doesn’t use every tool simply because they are good tools. They choose the one that best serves the work before them. Wisdom works the same way.

Our strengths are not meant to define us. They are meant to serve us. And when guided by discernment, they become not blind spots, but instruments of skillful living.
