The Fortune of Sleep

To be able to sleep, and to sleep well, is a quiet fortune. The simple act of slipping into slumber on a soft bed is something to be treasured.
I think of those in Gaza, or in any war-torn land, for whom this "luxury" - to lie down safely, calmly, lovingly - is a distant wish.
To be able to sleep in, too, is a comfort and a grace in this striving world. With a knowing mind, I allowed myself that gift for three mornings - Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. No alarms, no timing of waking.
A calm washed over me. Time, for once, felt on my side. I moved through the hours in quiet stride - no rush, no strings pulled by the world outside. I was simply in flow.
I am so fortune-filled. Grateful.
