A Quiet Kind of Freedom

It dawned on me that meditation is not about attaining a certain state. It is not about sitting long enough to become peaceful. Not about emptying the mind. Not about becoming someone different, wiser, calmer, or more spiritual.

It is simply being here. Just so. Stillness, here and now.

Then it struck me: Those people who can sit quietly for a good part of their day are literally living stillness. They are not trying to achieve something. They are simply comfortable being still, not chasing the next thing, fixing the present moment, seeking stimulation, or trying to become someone else. They are simply here.

Perhaps that is what I have been searching for. There is something almost comical about the realization. What am I looking for, really?

It’s all right there. Not tomorrow. Not after another hundred days of practice. Not after becoming more disciplined. Not after finally learning how to meditate “properly.”

Meditation is simply the willingness to stop for a moment and experience life without asking it to be different. To sit. To breathe. To feel. To be.

This realization feels like freedom. A very quiet kind of freedom. The kind that does not need to announce itself. Just stillness. Just so.
